A Day (not a van) Down by the River

In the 1000 Islands region and on the corner of Alexandria Drive and Mary Drive in Clayton, NY you’ll find the Wood Boat Brewery nestled right next to the mighty St. Lawrence River and just a short walk to the center of Clayton. Walking up to the brewery you’re taken with the beautiful surrounding of the area. Right next the brewery is the Antique Boat Museum which is a cool place to visit.

Classic Architecture “Luring” us in

The brewery building itself is a charming old style design adorned with beautiful painted corbels and an inviting wraparound deck with plenty seating. Dogs are allowed on the outside deck.

Cozy, Warm and Friendly

Inside you’ll find a nautically designed interior with a long bar and seating inside. The inside is small but very comfortable. Because they serve good food (see below) and are also a brewery destination you may have to wait a while to get a seat but if you’re like me, that’s fine as long as I can chat with locals, and enjoy my favorite craft beverage while I wait!

Brick Oven Pizza with Craft Brew – What’s not to Like?

Featured in the center behind the bar is their brick oven with hand-chiseled “WBB” within the brick face calling for attention. One of the Wood Boat Brewery specialties is their food and brick oven pizzas which are very good! Like I mentioned before, they are popular for their specialty pizzas so plan ahead to perhaps wait for seating or call ahead.

And Begin…

We ordered a flight of Channel Marker IPA, Milk Stout, Bourbon Aged Ale and Hook, Line and Sinker IPA. All were very good. The Milk Stout had some caramel notes and was very good. The Channel Marker IPA had muted grapefruit notes. The Bourbon Aged Ale had butterscotch and honey notes and had a great finish. The Hook, Line and Sinker IPA had orange rind notes.

Wait, the Food is Good Too?

We also sampled a small plate of artichoke dip that came with small bread triangle that were deliciously chewy and the dip was excellent. In fact I have to say that was the best artichoke dip I ever had! We sat next to 2 very nice local people who were very friendly and talked with us for a while and made us feel welcome. More friends! All in all a very good experience.

Exploring the Area Around Town

Around the area and into the village of Clayton you’ll find plenty of interesting craft/art shops, retail, restaurants, entertainment and lodging. Being in the 1000 Islands region you’ll only be a short drive of 20 minutes from the beautiful Alexandria Bay area, Watertown, Cape Vincent. The entire region is packed with hiking, boating, kayaking, canoeing, camping, biking, touring and of course craft breweries!
